Well, the Gingerbread (2.3) release of Android is available for HTC Droid Incredible users. Well, for some of them, anyhow. My husband and I both own these phones. The reports of users receiving it OTA (over the air) started on September 2nd, just a few days after HTC reported on Facebook and Twitter that this long anticipated update was coming.
However, it is now the 17th, a shocking 15 days later. My husband got his update on September 8th, and I am still waiting! Apparently, I am not the only one. A lot of the forums out there are filled with people complaining about not getting this update. Rumors abound on the rhyme or reason behind how the order of the push happens: by serial number, order of activation, or physical location…who knows? I am guessing that it is NOT physical location, as my husband and I are in the same house and one of us has got it, and the other has not. Verizon Wireless claims that this upgrade takes 7-14 days to find everyone. Unfortunately, this is now 15 days. What is going on? Have they pulled it due to the horrible bugs people are reporting? Seriously, if my husband had not already received the update, I would be starting to doubt it exists, and would be chalking it up to rumor.
I think the most obvious solution is to have Verizon Wireless and HTC offer it for direct download on their websites. (When I had my LG Ally, LG had the Froyo update available for download for those who didn’t want to play the waiting game.)
For those who HAVE gotten it? Apparently, no one is happy. My husband had problems with the APPS2SD function. Basically, any apps installed to SD cards before the update ceased to function after the update. And it is not just him, as this is a widespread problem. Considering how long it took to release the update, and that this is a problem with other Gingerbread releases, I am highly surprised it was not fixed. The problem? A glitch in the software makes the APPS2SD look for the installed files on the internal memory for your phone rather than the SD card memory. Suggestions are out there for the fix for this, so it is not too big a deal. Other people are reporting problems with the phones rebooting over and over, or the phone turning back on mysteriously after hitting the power button. Still more are reporting weird glitches where the phone thinks it is in the Sprint network instead or Verizon, and the Sprint apps are appearing in the marketplace.
Here’s to hoping Verizon and HTC will get their acts together and release the update to everyone soon, AND get a patch or fix for these bugs out to end the frustrations. As for me? I will be calling to complain soon if my update does not come.
