Crafting: Cricut Mini Cover!

Before I get started, I wanted to touch on why I felt the need to actually make my own pattern for the Cricut Mini. I spent days searching all over the net for a pattern. In my wanderings, I found patterns for the original Cricut, as well as the Cricut Expression, some of which I have used in the past to make covers for my older machines. But nothing for the Mini. (Or the Imagine, for that matter, which is my next undertaking.) They HAVE to exist, because obviously people are selling finished covers on eBay and Etsy and whatnot. My guess is that by sharing their patterns they assume they would be losing money. But what about those of us who don’t want to have a preset fabric chosen for us? What if we want to sew it ourselves? So, I was a bit annoyed, and then realized I’d have to just make my own pattern. And even more importantly, I wanted to share that pattern FREE with others like myself who’d rather sew their own.

Please, do not put my pattern/instructions for download on your own site or blog. Instead, point people here to download it off of my site. That’s my only request in exchange for a free pattern. Other than that, I have no restrictions. If you want to use this pattern to make your own covers to sell on eBay, knock yourself out! (Note, this instruction pattern assumes that you have basic sewing knowledge.)

• First off, you will need the file, with pattern side pieces, as well as a set of instructions. It is in PDF format: **File Removed. This machine is no longer supported by Cricut.**
• Cut out the 2 side panel patterns on the page on folded fabric. (Fold edge and seam allowance sides are marked.)
• Cut out rectangular piece (by hand or using rotary cutter) sized 17″ x 12 1/2″ (Used here was a Mickey fabric…what can I say, you know I’m a Disney freak!)
• ***Extra step not in instructions for my personal cover*** I cut a strip of beige fabric about 3″ high and 17″ long. I used my computerized embroidery machine to embroider my name on it in red (to coordinate with Mickey’s iconic pants.) I then folded under the top and bottom of the strip, pinned it to the rectangular piece, and used the sewing machine to sew it in place.
• Pin the” right” side of one short edge of the rectangle to the rounded (unfolded) “right” side of the rounded part of a side panel piece. Repeat with other side.
• Sew side panels to rectangular piece with sewing machine, with a 1/2″ seam allowance. (Or by hand if you do not have a machine. Another possibility is using Stitch Witchery to fuse the fabric together without sewing.)
• Turn fabric so the pattern or darker side is now on the outside.
• Pin a 1/2″ hem at the bottom of the cover.
• Sew hem. You could also sew an elastic into the hem so it fits more snugly around the bottom of the cover.
