Cricut Iron-on part 2

Last week I put the new Cricut Iron-ons in the spotlight. (See article here.) As mentioned, this was scheduled to be released today. And released it was!

The one pictured above is the pink glitter iron-on. Glitter colors also come in: silver, gold,  and black. Regular iron-ons (AKA Iron-on Lite) come in these colors: gray, black, cyan, red, white, teal, and pink. A pre-sale bundle is/was also available with the Iron-on Lite in pink and cyan, and the Iron-on Glitter in black.

I can see this being a big thing, especially with those who had a hard time figuring out the Yudu for screen-printing. This is definitely a less messy option…no emulsion, no paint, and not much clean-up. The only thing Yudu would have to beat this is the fact that with this you can only cut what you have for fonts and image in your cartridge/online collection. Yudu can screen print ANYTHING you print out on transparencies.

***(Side tip from Knarrly: Yudu supplies are being clearanced out for $1.75 each on cricutmachine.com. Grab them while they’re hot! I have stocked up on a LOT. Sadly, the screens are all sold out. BUT, my local Joann Fabric store had clearanced out a bunch of Yudu supplies last week, and I snagged like 3 screens for $3.97 each! Why? The machine is being discontinued! Get supplies wherever you can while you can. After that, you’ll need to get supplies from companies like Blick’s Art Supply for paints, squeegees, emulsion, etc. Some online providers also sell aftermarket screens. See my Yudu tips post for more information! In light of the number of people who are probably going to snatch one of these up now that they are being deep clearanced, I will probably put a video guide on here at some point. I was actually just working with the emulsion the other day for a big t-shirt project, and I know Yudu’s own emulsion is very tricky to apply. But it CAN be done.)*** 

Ok, back on track! Description on Cricut’s website is as follows:

“Cricut^® Iron-on Glitter is a decorative heat transfer film that makes apparel and accessories all your own. Personalize everything from sports team wear, t-shirts, and jackets to bags, aprons, scarves, and hats. You can even customize home décor items such as pillows, blankets, basket liners, and wall hangings.

Cricut^® Iron-on sheets are made up of two parts. The film is the actual material that will be ironed onto your project, and the liner is the carrier sheet that holds the design in place and protects your iron during the application process.”

The rolls are priced on their site for $14.99, and you get a 12″x19″ piece of material, and instructions. It appears they also give you a coupon for $5 off a digital image purchase of $9.99 (for use in Cricut Craft Room software.)

If you decide you want to play around with this stuff (I know I do!) make sure you follow the instructions carefully. You ONLY want to cut through the iron-on material, and not the placement liner. Cricut provides a cutting guide to help you:

• For Cricut Expression: glitter iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: medium, speed: medium; regular iron-on – blade depth: 2, pressure: low, speed: medium
• For Cricut Expression 2: glitter iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: 3, speed: medium; regular iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: 3, speed: medium
• For Cricut Mini: glitter iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: 3, speed: medium; regular iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: 2, speed: medium
• For Cricut Imagine: glitter iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: 2, speed: medium; regular iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: 2, speed: medium
• For Cricut & Cricut Create: glitter iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: medium, speed: medium; regular iron-on – blade depth: 3, pressure: low, speed: medium

To go along with their new line of iron-on material, they also released two related “project” cartridges, which are perfect for t-shirts and other fun projects.
