When I first got the LG Ally, it was my first “smartphone”, and I was impressed. I chose it for the price, and because it had the slide out keyboard.
It did not take me long to realize that the internal memory was so low it could not run more than a few apps. I have had to delete many good apps because of “low memory” warnings. Eventually, Android 2.2 (Froyo) was made available, which supported Apps2SD. The problem? Not all apps can be put on the SD card (it is the software designer’s decision) and most apps still take up space internally even if you can install it to your SD card.
The minute I swapped out the SD card to a new 8GB card, the problems got worse. Every 2 minutes, the phone started telling me the SD card had been unexpectedly removed even though it was still in there with the cover over the slot. (Was a decent SD card, too, SanDisk.) Any other SD cards tested had the same problem. Occasionally the phone would reject the SD card to the point of rebooting the phone over and over. Research online shows this is a widespread issue that many Ally users are experiencing. Putting the original SD card back in is the only way to overcome this…which is absurd. Why make an SD slot if you cannot replace or upgrade the SD card?
The end result? I threw my Ally aside in a drawer as a spare phone and used my son’s upgrade status to get an HTC Droid Incredible. The lack of a slide out keyboard in the Incredible was a better thing to swallow in exchange for having 8GB of internal memory and a more user friendly SD slot!
(I also posted this as a review on Verizon Wireless, to warn other users about getting this phone, which is still available for purchase!)
I hope to get up a review of more Android apps soon!
